Abandoned and Abused: Angel and his Friend ,Jinky, Find Happy Homes

The night is dark. The Santa Anna winds have stopped blowing and the weather system that had been waiting offshore has moved inland. The moon alternately shines and is darkened by clouds, creating shifting shadows that seem to move on their own. I'm huddled against the back of my dog house, peering out into the darkness, waiting, hoping they don't come. Wait, what was that? Movement or shadows? The wind puffs and I catch a scent, faint, but there. Shaking, I press closer to the back of my dog house, hoping the coyotes don't find me this time. The scent is getting stronger, there is movement! I awake with a start and am disoriented for a moment. Where am I? Then I look behind me and see my new Mommy sleeping. I curl up against her in my blankie and remember that I am safe now. I look over and see my new sister, Dolly, sleep woofing and running, happily chasing squirrels in dreamland. She's never known unhappiness or fear. The bad dreams of my former life still come sometimes, but I always wake up and know that I am finally loved.
